The Soaring Legacy of Winter Sports in the Adirondacks

As we cozy up by the fireplace in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, we can’t help but reflect on the rich history and exciting future that make our little corner of the world truly special this time of year. Today, we’re thrilled to share with you the story of the Empire State Winter Games and the exhilarating legacy of ski jumping in Lake Placid.

The Chilled Chronicles of Empire State Winter Games

Picture this: Lake Placid, blanketed in a pristine layer of snow, with the majestic Adirondack peaks standing sentinel. It’s in this picturesque setting that the Empire State Winter Games first made their mark in 1980. Born out of the spirit of the Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid that same year, the Games have evolved into a celebration of winter sports, community, and the indomitable Adirondack spirit.

Year after year, athletes from all walks of life converge on Lake Placid to compete in a dazzling array of events, from ice hockey and figure skating to cross-country skiing and snowboarding. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the camaraderie that binds them together, fueled by the shared love for winter sports. The event encompasses all ages and all abilities of athletes, including Adaptive Alpine, Adaptive Biathlon, and Adaptive Bobsled.

But the Empire State Winter Games aren’t just about the present—they’re a testament to the enduring legacy of Lake Placid as a premier winter sports destination. The torch passed from the 1980 Olympics still burns brightly, inspiring new generations to lace up their skates, grab their sleds, and embrace the thrill of winter.

The Torch Relay tradition continues this year along two routes over the course of five days. The Buffalo Route starts at Holiday Valley Ski Resort in Ellicottville and the New York City Route starts at McCann Ice Arena in Poughkeepsie.

The two torch relay routes will meet in Lake Placid at the Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. The Empire State Winter Games will run through the weekend, ending Sunday, February 4th, 2024.
