What is a Mountain Modern Home?

by Brooks Reynolds on June 14, 2022
What is a Mountain Modern Home?

Over the past couple of years, mountain modern homes have become one of the most sought-after home designs. But what is a modern mountain home and why has it become so popular?

A mountain modern home is characterized by clean lines, an open layout, natural materials, uncluttered interior, and lots of light. With the use of neutral colors, the space easily transitions from season to season.

Clean lines, simply put, are lines in the architecture that are uninterrupted and are often associated with modern architectural design.

The blend of modern lines with materials like wood, stone, and exposed concrete makes a statement but also grounds your home, keeping it rooted in the past while clearly bounding toward the future. The use of natural materials also invites the outdoors in, giving the calming feeling that we all experience in nature. Natural materials are known to increase comfort, stimulate productivity, and reduce stress and anxiety, along with providing many other health benefits.

The benefits of having an open floor plan include improved traffic flow and increased natural light. The use of an open floor plan makes entertaining and communicating easier (think: family quality time). This also creates multifunctional spaces, whether working from home and/or working-out at home.

A lofty ceiling helps stimulate our creative workflow and offers a sense of spaciousness and grandeur. It also creates a sense of airiness and allows more places for sunlight to go when it streams through the windows.

Mono-pitched roofs are also a characteristic of modern mountains. A mono-pitched roof is simply a roof that only slopes in one direction. They are typically used on single story buildings but can be suitable up to four stories. Mono-pitched roofs are advantageous in places with harsh weather conditions, since they allow rainwater and snow to easily drain from the roof. This is especially important in the Adirondacks where snowfall can cause structural damage due to its heavy weight. Most experts also say that mono-pitched roofs are the most sustainable roof type available because they are more energy efficient. Additionally, the large wall at the front of the house supports high windows which allow more natural light into the home.

Overall, we expect mountain modern homes to continue to pop up in the Adirondack region; our mountain views, trees, clean air, rock formations and easy access to outdoor recreation all create the perfect natural landscaping to let the outdoors in.

If you are interested in updating your current home to include a mountain modern feel, we can advise on architects, designers and/or contractors who can make your mountain modern dreams come true.
