Summer Activities for the Whole Family

Summer Activities for the Whole Family

We met some friends yesterday that are new to the Adirondacks and it sparked the conversation about all there is to do in the area, regardless of the weather. As school lets out for the summer, and restrictions continue to lift, I know we are eager to get out and enjoy all activities out of the house. I’ve compiled a list of all there is to do in our neck of the woods.

Rainy day activities that you can do year-round:

Just Bead It is your one stop shop for all things jewelry making!  Located on Main Street in Lake Placid, you can either stop in to shop for jewelry or make an appointment to create your own piece of jewelry.  The kids love to make necklaces there!

The Lake Placid Public Library on Mirror Lake has been the community’s leading literary destination for nearly 140 years.  Offering books, movies, music, art, e-books, children’s programs, and more, there is something for everyone in the family.  With stunning views of Mirror Lake and surrounding mountains from the reading porch.  The library also offers a weekly Zoom story time every Friday at 10:30.  Our favorite local bookstore, The Bookstore Plus, also offers a number of both in person and Zoom events alongside their great selection of books and art supplies.

The Wild Center provides activities and exhibits for all ages. Make a reservation to connect with nature through their outdoor experiences like their Wild Walk or explore the trails on their 115-acre campus. Starting on July 1, they plan a phased reopening of indoor amenities.  Not in the Adirondacks? You can still enjoy the wide array of programs that The Wild Center offers through their Wild Center Digital platform.

The Lake Placid Olympic Museum is a great activity for all generations.  Located in the Olympic Center, head to their website to find out the latest happenings.

The Lake Placid Center for the Arts is the North Country’s most comprehensive multi-arts center. The LPCA is currently offering a variety of virtual and in-person experiences, head to their website to find out how you can get involved and discover their upcoming events.

ADK Foot Sanctuary is one of the most serene spaces on Main Street. A sanctuary for your soul and your soles, you don’t want to miss this opportunity to indulge and relax in their cozy, calming space.

Summertime outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy:

Boots and Birdies is a family fun center that is guaranteed to provide hours of fun for the whole family. Mini Golf, Eurobung, gemstone mining, complete with drinks and snacks.

Experience Outdoors – an experience you will harness for a lifetime! Take zip line tour, explore their adventure park, or experience more of their unique offerings including 3D archery, team building, mountaintop yoga, and more!

Play a round (or 3) of tennis at the courts at the Lake Placid Public Beach. Private lessons, hitting sessions with the pros and clinics are also offered throughout the season at the Whiteface Club and Resort

Golf in the heart of the Adirondacks at the Whiteface Club and Resort and experience the beauty and challenge of one of the Country’s oldest golf courses, steeped in over 100 years of rich history. Secure a tee time or schedule a lesson or clinic with a PGA Pro.

Experience the Cliffside Coaster at Mt. Van Hoevenberg with a scenic ride to the top and then control your own ride down – going as slow or as fast as you’d like.

The Keene Farmers Market is a fun Sunday family activity. Happening every Sunday, 9:30AM-2PM from May 30 – October 10.

There are few better things than an ice cream or a shaved ice on a hot summer day. Be sure to stop into Emma’s Lake Placid Creamery to satiate your sweet tooth!

Summer Camps are a favorite pastime, with lots of options here in the Adirondacks:

The Lake Placid Center for the Arts offers a number of one-week courses for children to explore the Arts through their visual and performing arts summer camp, called Camp LPCA.

Eagle Island Camp is an overnight camp, also offering day camps, located on its own wooded island on Upper Saranac Lake.

St. Agnes Schools offers a Summer Camp from the last week of June through the third week of August, Monday-Friday, from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. “Students enjoy theme weeks, art projects, field trips, and an enjoyable mix of indoor and outdoor activities including swimming at the pool!”

Dreadhead Soccer Camp in Lake Placid starts Monday, July 19, 2021 and offers Half Day (ages 5-6), Full Day (ages 7-12) and Advanced Academy (ages 13-17).

Lake Placid Soccer Centre offers a Day Camp/Clinic in Lake Placid July 12-16 and August 16-20 and a Day Camp/Clinic in Canton, NY at St. Lawrence University July 23-26.
